William Allum is Consultant Surgeon at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, London with clinical interests in oesophageal and gastric cancer and breast disease. His main area of academic interest is in oesophageal and gastric cancer with a research interest in perioperative multimodality therapy.
He was President of the Association of Upper GI Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (AUGIS) 2012-14. He is a Board member of the European Society of Surgical Oncology.
He has maintained an interest in training throughout his consultant career and was a member of the General Surgery SAC from 2003 and Chairman from 2010-12. He was the Surgical Director of the Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Project from 2012-2104 and has been chair of Joint Committee on Surgical Training from 2015 to 2017. He is also an examiner for the Intercollegiate Examination in General Surgery (FRCS) with specific topics in upper GI surgery and Breast disease.
He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers. He was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh ad hominem in 2014 and Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 2017. He was joint chair of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges / General Medical Council working group on the implementation of the Generic Professional Capabilities.
He is a member of the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and is Council Lead for the Improving Surgery Project.
