Dr Mario Abinun is Emeritus Consultant in Paediatric Immunology at the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and also holds the position of Associate Lecturer in the Primary Immunodeficiency Group at the Institute of Cellular Medicine at Newcastle University.
During his NHS career, Dr Abinun played a key role in developing one of only two UK national supra-regional centres for haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in children with primary immunodeficiencies and rheumatic/autoimmune disorders.
His expertise in paediatric immunology includes primary immunodeficiency (PID) and immune dysregulation disorders, including autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases, and he was involved at an international and national level in developing guidelines for the immunisation of immunocompromised children. He also specialises in inflammatory rheumatologic disease.
