Dr Jonathan Bannister is a practicing senior consultant in Pain Medicine and Anaesthesia. He holds the posts of Consultant with NHS Tayside and Honorary Senior Lecturer in the University of Dundee.

Dr Bannister has an established medico-legal practice instructed by both claimant and defendant solicitors, 80% for claimant at present. He is instructed by a range of solicitors, including several high profile companies, and also by the medical defence agencies and NHS legal departments.

Specialist areas include chronic pain after injury, post-operative pain relief, treatment of chronic and neuropathic pain. He is instructed in negligence claims both in pain medicine and anaesthesia. Opinion and decision making in pain medicine is often complex and so he is well used to consulting with Counsel.

Current clinical practice is divided between pain medicine and anaesthesia. In pain medicine he specializes in neuropathic pain, the interface between pain and drug misuse and spinal cord stimulation for pain. In anaesthesia his current clinical practice is in neurosurgery, and in orthopaedic and trauma surgery. Prior to this he had an extensive practice in anaesthesia for vascular surgery.

Dr Bannister is recognized as a key opinion leader. He sat on Scottish Government’s Chronic Pain Steering Group and was a member of the national guideline development group which produced SIGN 136: Management of Chronic Pain. He is an advisor to Scottish Medicines Consortium. He is a Foundation Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine in the Royal College on Anaesthetists. He has led both anaesthesia and pain services for NHS Tayside.

He continues to lecture nationally and internationally, has authored 27 peer-reviewed papers, published one book and authored chapters in others.
