Dan is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth since 1999. Before that he had been a Senior Registrar in Bristol and the South West and RSO at St Mark’s Hospital. He was awarded the ASGBI gold medal in the intercollegiate examination in surgery. Dan has published 35 peer reviewed papers and several book chapters on aspects of colorectal and general surgery.
His experience includes several hundred resections (including laparoscopic) for bowel cancer, as well as management of Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis, diverticular disease, rectal prolapse and anal conditions. He has a special interest in major abdominal surgery including for intestinal failure and complex abdominal wall reconstruction. He is “on call” for emergency general surgery admissions and enjoys emergency decision-making and operating.
Dan has worked to improve surgical outcomes across the whole team in which he works. He was instrumental in the creation of a Surgical High Care Unit in Portsmouth, development of a surgical skills lab and securing Portsmouth as a National Training Centre in laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery in 2009.
Dan has been Clinical Director for Colorectal Surgery in Portsmouth, Chair of the Colorectal SSG Sough Central Cancer Network, Lead of the joint Portsmouth & Chichester anal Cancer MDT and surgical Lead of the Surgical High Care Unit and Colorectal Enhanced Recovery Programme in Portsmouth. Dan has received training as an Expert Witness with Inspire MediLaw. He is happy to accept medico-legal instructions in the fields of Colorectal Surgery and Emergency General Surgery.
