I am a practicing consultant general surgeon at Royal Gwent Hospital ABUHB (Aneurin Bevan University Health Board) with a specialist interest in GI (gastrointestinal) surgery. I have been employed in that capacity for 13 years. I am the lead laparoscopic GI surgeon for ABUHB and I carry out over 300 laparoscopic procedures a year including laparoscopic hernia repair, cholecystectomies and complex oesophago-gastric and hiatal procedures. I participate in the emergency general surgical on call, diagnosing and treating urgent and emergent abdominal pathologies including hernias and gastrointestinal pathologies. I perform both elective and emergency diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopies.
I have been preparing medico-legal reports (personal injury and clinical negligence) since 2005 (13 years) and my expertise include awareness of Bolam v Bolitho and Montgomery v Lanarkshire decisions. Currently, I am instructed in around 25 cases a year with 80% relating to clinical negligence; my instructions in that regards are 80% claimant, 15% defendant and 5% single joint expert. I have received training in report writing, giving evidence in court and in the CPR requirements for experts by Inspire Law and Bond Solon.
My clinical research interests revolve around prevention of complications during laparoscopic surgery and my basic science research is focused on prevention and early identification of oesophageal cancer.
